Making open educational resources truly open
Greyled is a learning platform for higher education built around open textbooks. We bring Open Educational Resources together with the activities, homework and grading a course needs, without the cost of a traditional textbook.
Our vision is to make quality education accessible to all students, regardless of their financial background.
Why we started
Greyled began in a classroom. Tired of watching his students spend an exorbitant amount on textbooks, Giovanni set out to teach his Spanish program entirely from open textbooks, and then wrote them himself when the right ones didn’t exist.
Writing the books turned out to be only half the job. A course also needs activities, homework and grades, and the materials professors build around a textbook rarely travel with it. Greyled puts the textbook at the centre and keeps everything a course needs around it, so that work can be shared.

Every textbook in the library is an open educational resource. Students read them free, with no limited content.
Built to be adapted
Professors can write their own textbooks and activities, or start from someone else's and change every detail for their course.
Better with every course
Professors share the activities and materials they build around a textbook, so the next professor who picks it up can choose from all of them.

Giovanni Zimotti
Co-founder
- Director of Spanish Language Instruction at the University of Iowa, with a PhD in Spanish Linguistics from The University of Alabama.
- Author of the open textbooks Semillas, Maletín Médico and Salón de Clase, which have moved Iowa's Spanish program onto free textbooks.
- Recognised with a 2022 Open Education Award for Excellence in the Educator category.
